Day 44

Day 44

I awoke behind the Spanish Fort Methodist Church and broke camp. It usually only takes me a few moments to do so i.e. take down the hammock, roll up the sleeping bag, and put them in the buggy.
I jumped on the 90 and made my way down towards to causeway.

I ate bananas for breakfast as I walked. I snapped lots of pictures.

By late morning I found myself in a dilemma. I was a mile from downtown Mobile, where the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is located. In between was a tunnel with no shoulder. It seemed to be the only way across.
I found some DOT workers and explained my situation. A man named Johnson told me there was a bridge 4 miles to the north. In total it would be a 9 mile detour. I was trying to make Mass at 12:10p.m. Robert found me a ride across.

A few minuted later I was in the back of a pickup speeding through the tunnel. It was pretty wild. Robert dropped me off at Conception St and we parted ways.

John

I met John. He told me he was hungry. We went to Subway and shared a meal. John has been on the street for 4 months. Before that he was in prison. I told him I was happy he wasn’t in prison anymore. We both appreciated the shared meal and the company. I gave him a few things and we parted ways.

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Mobile, AL

I headed to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception for Mass and went to confession. It was a beautiful building and very peaceful. I also passed through the Door of Mercy!

After Mass I headed over to the parish office building and spoke with George. I asked for permission to camp and he wrote down my name and number and would pass along my information to the pastor.
I headed to the park and met some friends. Bush, Robert, and Winston.

I gave Robert some water and some other things I had.

Robert with his eyes closed!

It felt good hanging out in the park. A young couple who just got married was taking pictures. Winston told me of a water fountain a few blocks away where I could wash my feet.
I got a call from George, the folks at the Cathedral wanted to put me up in a motel for the night! I gladly accepted, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find somewhere safe to camp.
I doubled back to the office and met up with George. We walked a few blocks to the motel. George has volunteered at the Cathedral for a few years, but just started working there as an employee a few months ago. He was a really nice guy, wished I snapped a photo of him. We parted ways and I was left at the motel.

There was a concert that evening in the park at 6:30p.m. I planned on meeting up with some of the people I had met that day in the park there. But I fell asleep! I must have needed the rest.

Glad you made it to the Cathedral and the Holy Door. Did I miss something? Did you get another buggy?
